The apprentice offered mirrors the apprenticeship I received upon my graduation 30 years ago. It provided me the well-rounded experience and confidence to lead my own architectural practice. This position has provided the confidence for three of my past mentees to start their own firms. It has led others to become confident in the profession and some to be accepted to the top-5 graduate schools in the country.
The apprentice works directly with myself, Donald Lococo, founder and principal, one-on-one, 90% of the time in our decidedly small practice in a studio environment. They are directly involved in the schematic and design development phases of projects on the boards with me.
The selected applicant will not be responsible for repetitive or mundane drafting. These tasks will be done by others. Instead, Autocad tasks will be limited to a much smaller fractional percentage of the day (occasionally 10-20%) and within 4 months, the recipient will be involved in marking up drawings for others to complete.(sooner depending on previous experience)
The apprentice will frequently attend site visits with contractors, design meetings with clients, photo shoots and occasional social events, i.e. building openings, architectural award ceremonies, etc.
Awarded applicant will be on many phone calls with direct client rapport, and will have access to an assistant and a summer employee.
Part of the position is learning to direct people below them in a managerial capacity
Awarded applicant will be able to propose major design ideas and will be able to create images of design direction
Awarded apprentice will work alongside other employees and refer to them for guidance who have been with us for 12 years
The position has a built-in level of customization particular to the awarded apprentice’s talents. In the past, apprentices have allocated a portion of their time towards building models, photography for awards and social media, furniture building etc.
It is a 3-year position. Once the term is completed, the apprentice would advance to a higher position in our firm.
Although we are specific to highest end design of Single Family Residential homes, we excel in all styles; from historic to Classical and presently working on two sizable modern projects.
Like the mentor who hired me, and the mentor who hired him, we follow in a line of nationally published and AIA-awarded architectural firms.
Because of the high learning curve days are busy but overtime is not excessive
Applicants submit resume portfolio of architectural and any other creative work including past experience and GPA. Must be familiar with Autocad and Sketchup. Nikon or camera experience a plus.
